Innovation in mould manufacturing with Okuma’s new MCR-S series of gantry-type machining centres

Okuma MCR-S celada

The MCR-S series is the latest addition to Okuma’s range of double-column machining centres. It is the result of nearly 60 years’ experience in the manufacture of gantry-type machining centres, combining a cast-iron double-column structure with the electronics and software managed by the OKUMA OSP-300 numerical control system. Entirely developed at Okuma’s factories, these machines enhance machining performance during roughing, semi-finishing and finishing operations, reducing cycle times and improving the quality of the final surface finishes.

Okuma is investing more and more in the development of software capable of simplifying and reducing machine set-up times, which is essential for cutting costs. One such piece of software is the CAS collision avoidance system, which is essential on complex machines for simulating, verifying and anticipating potential collisions. Another key piece of software for optimising the process is SERVO NAVI. This technology improves cycle times and accuracy. The software automatically detects the load on the table and adjusts the optimal acceleration and deceleration speeds. This enables faster cycle times and ensures that the electronics and mechanics are utilised to their full potential.

Another essential piece of software for large-scale machines is the Thermo-Friendly Concept. This concept stems directly from the symmetrical design of the machine structure, which is intended to manage the issue of thermal expansion. The combination of Okuma’s hardware and software ensures extremely accurate thermal compensation, managing expansion at all times of the day with a precision of 0.1 microns. Furthermore, it guarantees unprecedented dimensional stability for all operations in non-air-conditioned workshops where temperature fluctuations of 9° occur over a 24-hour period. It eliminates the need for manual adjustments by the operator, ensures machining to thousandths-of-a-millimetre tolerances and avoids time wasted on lengthy warm-up operations. This also reduces energy costs and downtime costs. The MCR-S series was unveiled at EMO 2019.
